"How do I as an art educator decide what's worth teaching in the classroom?"
I believe art to be a form of individual exploration achievable in the art classroom by learning the world's cultures, histories, along with student self expression. This is the safe environment I establish, one in which students are comfortable to be inquisitive, expand their knowledge with cross-disciplinary lessons, build problem-solving skills, and gain collaborative meaning. I accomplish all this by introducing art in numerous forms that allow students to approach their projects in mathematical, scientific or philosophical ways. Many students may not be naturally inclined as some to the arts, thus by providing lessons and modifications for those who have strengths in other subjects, I can ignite connections to the concept of a medium or process.
Art teachers must stay connected to the community, dedicate themselves to their students, and supply necessary tools for success within and outside the classroom. Art I believe is therapeutic, and essential to those who differ from their peers. Working alongside each other in all stages of a project promotes dialogue, helping to bridge and connect a classroom. Art has always been for myself the gift that keeps giving, and I have an obligation to share my gift with our young generation. I encourage students to not only think outside the box, but outside the sphere.
